From the official press release on Tuesday:

"The John Mackey Award has released the 2014 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2014 John Mackey recipient will be announced on December 10, 2014 and then presented live on December 11, 2014 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU."

You can keep up with the award in a quasi-tournament style. The midseason watch list will be announced on October 13th, semifinalists announced on Nevember 17th, and the finalists on November 24th.

Other Big 12 players on the list are Blake Bell from Oklahoma, Taylor McNamara from Oklahoma, and Jimmy Mundine from Kansas. Other notables include Kyle Carter from Penn State, Kivon Cartwright from Colorado State, Braxton Deaver from Duke, Jeff Heuerman from Ohio State, and Ben Koyack from Notre Dame.

The John Mackey Award has been honored since 2000. Notable previous winners of the award include Dallas Clark in 2002, Kellen Winslow II in 2003, Heath Miller in 2004, Aaron Hernandez in 2009, and Dwayne Allen in 2011.

E.J. Bibbs has been listed as a top five tight end on many college football preseason magazines. His versatility in playing at that position and possibly switching it up at wide receiver should make him a great candidate for the award.
