Kirby Van Der Kamp, Jansen Watson receive NFL camp auditions
By Brian Spaen
Former Iowa State football players Kirby Van Der Kamp and Jansen Watson will attend NFL camps to try and break into the league.
Cyclone Fanatic gave an update earlier today that Van Der Kamp will be trying out with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Watson with the Oakland Raiders.
"Iowa State’s former punter’s whereabouts was a big question following last weekends NFL Draft. According to Iowa State football’s Twitter page (@CycloneFB), Van Der Kamp has earned a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In addition to Van Der Kamp, former Cyclone cornerback Jansen Watson will camp with the Oakland Raiders."
Watson was a bit of a longshot to get a chance in the NFL, but his draft stock got higher as the draft got closer. He ended up being projected to be picked up in free agency according to NFL Draft Scout despite being ranked as the 102nd overall cornerback.
It was expected that Van Der Kamp would find a job, but a lot of people (including here) expected to see him get picked up in the draft.
Tampa Bay found success picking up a free agent at cornerback from the Cyclones in the past. Three years ago, the Bucs picked up Leonard Johnson. He had his biggest season yet last year with 62 total tackles (48 solo) and forced two turnovers.
