Kansas Jayhawks vs Iowa State Cyclones: Five keys to victory

For the past few weeks, we’ve been having fun with this segment – it didn’t appear that the Iowa State Cyclones even had the ability to win a game. Now that 3-7 Kansas is coming into town, it’s finally possible!

Jokes aside (kind of), how can the Cyclones muster their first and possibly only win in the Big 12 this season?

1. Brace for the deep freeze.

There will be no precipitation, but it will be a clear, breezy, and extremely cold day at Jack Trice Stadium. Tailgating could be worse with high winds bringing the temperature down to zero degrees, but the low will be in the single digits.

2. Defense needs to focus in on James Sims.

The only quarterback situation that’s equal or worse than Iowa State’s in the Big 12 is Kansas. However, senior running back James Sims is the real deal. He averages 91.4 yards a game, and will attempt to surpass the 1,000 mark on Saturday night.

3. Give the senior running backs all an opportunity.

Trust me, I’m aware that every senior running back probably doesn’t like my criticism. But Courtney Messingham should all give them a balanced mix along with Aaron Wimberly and DeVondrick Nealy. Might as well, there’s nothing to lose on senior night and they deserve a final chance to give their fans a show.

4. If either quarterback will have successful day throwing, it will be in the last two weeks.

The only teams that are worse than Iowa State in pass defense? Kansas and West Virginia. Let’s hope either Sam Richardson or Grant Rohach can get a little momentum heading into the offseason.

5. Fans, go out and show your support for the team.

It’s been a hard season, and for those that are sticking around Ames or leaving later during break, go out and support the team. Just make sure to bring your best winter gear, because it will be freezing.
