The Iowa State football team opens up the season facing two of their in-state rivals. Their first matchup is against FCS opponent Northern Iowa, who’s been giving FBS opponents nothing but problems in recent years.
UNI last defeated Iowa State in 2007, and since has come close to defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes multiple times. If it wasn’t for a Steele Jantz miracle two seasons ago, the Cyclones would have suffered a loss to the Panthers as they trailed late in the game.

While the season wasn’t up to UNI standards last year, plenty of their offense returns including running back David Johnson, who will be the team’s biggest threat on offense. Iowa State will try to counter with a solid stable of running backs of their own, including Shontrelle Johnson and James White.
