When the San Francisco 49ers went out on the field before their exhibition against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, Seneca Wallace was nowhere to be found. Multiple rumors started spreading around, from the former Iowa State quarterback getting released to possibly announcing his retirement.
Matt Maiocco, beat writer for the 49ers at CSN Bay Area, reported that just three quarterbacks warmed up for the team’s final preseason game, and Wallace didn’t go to San Diego with the team for “personal reasons.”
"Veteran Seneca Wallace was not on the field for warmups prior to the 49ers’ exhibition final against the San Diego Chargers. Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy and B.J. Daniels took part during pregame drills.Wallace did not make the trip to San Diego due to personal reasons, the 49ers said."
Who knows what those personal reasons could be, although some are hinting that it’s due to the quarterback pondering retirement. Back in July, Sage Rosenfels announced his retirement after a 12-year career.
Whatever the reason, it doesn’t bode well for him trying to win either the backup or third-string position, meaning that the veteran NFL quarterback will likely be cut before the regular season begins.
Earlier his preseason, Wallace was cut by the New Orleans Saints and was picked up by the 49ers four days later. He played in the final two minutes of the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.
