Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart stole the show winning both the 2012-2013 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Year Awards on Sunday. But Iowa State came away with multiple awards for five different players on the team.
The Cyclones had three players that won the annual awards. Will Clyburn won the Newcomer of the Year Award, Tyrus McGee won the Sixth Man of the Year Award (unsurprisingly), and Melvin Ejim won the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Ejim was on the Academic All-Big 12 Team at the end of last season, and continues to show great effort in the classroom.
No Iowa State players made it on the All-Big 12 First Team, but Clyburn made the second team which featured all guards: Baylor’s Pierre Jackson, Kansas’ Travis Releford, Kansas State’s Angel Rodriguez, and Oklahoma State’s Markel Brown. Ejim made the third team.
Chris Babb made the All-Big 12 Defensive Team. Both Jeff Withey and Smart came away as unanimous decisions in the group. Georges Niang and Clyburn both made the All-Big 12 Rookie Team with Ben McLemore and Smart getting unanimous decisions. Both defensive and rookie teams had six players honored due to voting ties.
Korie Lucious and McGee were listed as All-Big 12 Honorable Mentions.
