Big 12 Power Rankings: Wildcats Impress Over Hurricanes

Sep 8, 2012; Manhattan, KS, USA; Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein (7) runs away from Miami Hurricanes defensive back Vaughn Telemaque (7) and linebacker Eddie Johnson (44) during the Wildcats

As expected, the Big 12 dominated all of the FCS and lower-tier FBS opponents during the weekend. Texas State’s rocking of Houston may have been a one-hit wonder for the team after getting smacked by Texas Tech.

The key headlines were Kansas State’s 39-point dominating victory over Miami (FL) and quarterback Collin Klein’s all-purpose 281-yard day, Iowa State holding on to a second-straight victory against their rivals 9-6, Kansas further cementing themselves in last place losing to Rice 25-24, and Oklahoma State giving up an eye-opening 36 points in the second half against Arizona – that final being 59-38 Wildcats.

  1. Oklahoma: 2-0
Order was restored in Norman for a little bit. They’ll have a week off to prepare for a huge game against Kansas State.
  2. West Virginia: 1-0
    Idle.
  3. Texas: 2-0
Still had a slow start, but their defense showed why they are best in the league, crushing New Mexico 45-0 and holding them to just 35 passing yards.
  4. Kansas State: 2-0
That was an amazing display by Collin Klein, either Miami is more down than we thought or the Wildcats will be pushing for a Big 12 title this year.
  5. TCU: 1-0
Great showing in their Big 12 debut, but we’ll need to see more than just a blowout win over Grambling.
  6. Iowa State: 2-0
What an effort by the defense to hold on to a low-scoring victory over their rivals. Paul Rhoads is without question the right man for this job, and the Cyclones are heading in the right direction.
  7. Baylor: 1-0
    Idle.
  8. Texas Tech: 2-0
I expected more of a threat from new FBS squad Texas State, perhaps this team is better than we think.
  9. Oklahoma State: 1-1
That whole 84-point game doesn’t really matter. This loss was a reality check for the Cowboys. I still believe they will disappoint those thinking Mike Gundy is simply reloading.
  10. Kansas: 0-2
When Rice has been historically bad at defense the last few years, 24 points is pretty shameful. TCU coming into town next week could get ugly.
