After a wild first quarter, Iowa State settles down against Tulsa and pulls away with a late Shontrelle Johnson touchdown to win the opening game of the season.

Quarterback Steele Jantz proves that he was the right guy for the starting position, having a great first half in the air. He completed 22-30 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the day with only 41 more yards, but that was due to the Cyclones relying on their running backs more in the second half.

Johnson was star of the trio today, getting a career high 120 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. James White a good day with 10 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Jantz came back strong after a first quarter that saw him slightly inconsistent and even had a high pass that led to an interception after bouncing off a receiver’s hands. The defense also started tackling better after letting Tulsa go down the field and score a couple of early touchdowns.

Golden Hurricanes quarterback Cody Green went 23-49 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw two picks and was sacked twice. Iowa State stopped their running game rather consistently except for a long 77-yard run by Trey Watts in the second half.
