Here’s an update on Iowa State Cyclones athletics that deserve every fan’s attention and doesn’t involve the big two sports.

Men’s Golf – Europe Falls to United States in Fulmer Cup

The Cyclones’ own Scott Fernandez (sophomore) played for Team Europe in the 2013 Fulmer Cup over the weekend, hosted at Wilmington Country Club in New Castle, Delaware.

Unfortunately for the NCAA All-American, his home team went down by a score of 20.5 to 9.5 to the US at the end of the event. The Fulmer Cup is a mixture of singles and group match play.

Here were the results of Fernandez’s play throughout the event:

  • Four ball: Lost with Pedro Figueiredo (UCLA) against James Erkenbeck (New Mexico) and Daniel Berger (Florida St), 4 and 3
  • Team match play: Won with Ben Taylor against Erkenbeck and Michael Weaver (California), 4 and 3
  • First-round singles: Halved against Cory Whitsett (Alabama); had six birdies in the round.
  • Second-round singles: Lost against Whitsett, 3 and 2

Outdoor Track and Field – Cyclones Finish 13th Nationally Aided by Hillman, Saina

Two breakout performances catapulted Iowa State to a top-13 national finish at this season’s NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Eugene, Oregon.

Christina Hillman had a fourth-place finish at the women’s shot put final with her best throw of 56 feet and 6.75 inches last Saturday. Oregon’s Tia Brooks won the event with a throw of 62 feet and one-half inch.

Betsy Saina won the women’s 10,000-meter race on Wednesday with a time of 33:08.85. She also finished second in the 5,000-meter race on Friday, beaten by Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agonstino by 6.58 seconds.
