Where Iowa State Stands Before Signing Day

National Signing Day is tomorrow and all around the country, high school athletes will be faxing in their Letter of Intents to colleges.  Iowa State’s recruiting class is almost set, but there are three great recruits that may or may not end up at Iowa State University this fall.  If Paul Rhoads can land two of the three, it puts a cherry on top of a solid recruiting class.

The first player that is still up in the air is cornerback Damien Lawry.  Lawry is a 3-star but he has offers from all over the country including Notre Dame, A&M, California, Arkansas, and many other great programs.  However, the battle of Lawry is between Iowa State and Missouri.  Rivals.com has Lawry’s commitment rated as a “soft verbal”.  Lawry gave his commitment to ISU two weeks ago, but since then Missouri offered him and last week he was in Columbia for a visit.  However, Mizzou has recently picked up another cornerback which helps Iowa State’s chances of keeping on to Lawry.

Prediction on Lawry:  Iowa State

The next player that is unsure is Florida conerback Gary Simon.  Simon, like Lawry, is a 3-star and is ranked as the 46th-best cornerback according to Rivals.com.  Although Arkansas was once his favorite, it looks like the battle for Simon is between Oklahoma and Iowa State.  Like in Lawry’s case, Oklahoma has picked up an ex Baylor commit.  It is still rumored that Oklahoma is Simon’s favorite, but I think OU picking up the other corner really helps Iowa State.  I think he chooses the good guys.

Prediction on Simon:  Iowa State

I am literally saving the best for last.  Iowa State currently doesn’t have a 4-star recruit, but they may end up with one tomorrow.  D’Vario Montgomery, a WR, was teammates with current Cyclone QB, Sam Richardson.  Montgomery is committed to South Florida, but he took a visit to Ames last week and took in the Iowa State-Kansas basketball game (what a great game for a recruit to experience).  Montgomery has the talent to come in and play right away for the Cyclones.  I was optimistic last week about Montgomery coming to Iowa State, but it has worn off a little.  We’ll have to wait and see.

Prediction on Montgomery:  South Florida
